Indian-American Aruna Miller, the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor of Maryland, along with governor candidate Wes Moore, has won the gubernatorial race for the state in the United States midterm elections. With this historic win, Maryland now has its first Indian-American lieutenant governor as well as the first south Asian woman to serve in the key position in America. Significantly, Moore, who picked Miller as his running mate in the Democratic primary in 2021, will be the state’s first black governor.
Miller, a former executive director of Indian American Impact, was endorsed by the organisation, which supports Indian-American representation at every level of government in the US, as well as several other prominent Indian-American organisations and individuals.

Born in Hyderabad, Miller moved to the US with her parents when she was seven and grew up in New York. She earned a BS degree in civil engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology and has worked as a transportation engineer for local governments in California, Virginia, and Hawaii. She moved to Maryland in 1990, where she worked for the Montgomery county department of transportation. She was a member of the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee and president of South Asian American Society. She received the legislative champion award, women legislators of Maryland, in 2018.
