ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan announced Sunday that his “long march” to Islamabad would resume Tuesday from after a four-day gap from the same point in Punjab where he was shot at on November 4.
Addressing a news conference from his hospital bed in Lahore, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief said he would address the march remotely each day and join the retinue once it reaches the garrison city of Rawalpindi.
“We will resume our long march on Tuesday from Wazirabad where I and 11 others were shot and (PTI worker) Muazzam was martyred. Once the march reaches Rawalpindi, I will join and lead it myself,” Imran said, adding it could take the marchers 10 to 14 days to reach Rawalpindi, depending on the speed.
Imran then claimed that the FIR on his attack on a container truck had not been registered yet. “The FIR has not been registered because police say they are ready to nominate (name) the PM (Shehbaz Sharif) and (interior minister) Rana Sanaullah but cannot include (ISI officer) Major General Faisal (Naseer) in the case,” Imran said.
“It is my right to register an FIR against them. How is it possible that Punjab police under the provincial government keep giving excuses and not registering a case?” the former PM said.
Reiterating that all three were involved in his “assassination bid”, Imran demanded a transparent investigation to determine “the truth”.
In the context of his accusation against Major General Faisal, Imran described as “shocking” a statement by the military’s media wing spokesperson that criticising a military official was akin to defaming the Pakistan Army.
“This means if I say a judge is wrong, this means the entire judiciary is wrong. If someone says there is a corrupt person in PTI and I say that you have said that the entire party is corrupt. Is there any logic?” Imran asked.
The PTI chief welcomed PM Sharif’s demand for a judicial commission to probe the attack but raised several questions.
“I welcome the judicial commission but what will it do? The three people that I have named are above the agencies that will investigate this assassination attempt. How can we do an impartial investigation? This is why I want these people to resign so that the investigation is carried out transparently. It is possible I’m wrong but I want a transparent investigation,” Imran added.
