America’s 20-year war in Afghanistan has finally come to an end.
A giant C-17 transport laden with troops and the US ambassador flew out of Kabul airport a minute before midnight local time on August 31, the deadline set by President Joe Biden.
Celebratory gunfire echoed across Kabul as Taliban fighters took control of the Kabul airport.
“On the last airplane out was General Chris Donahue, the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, and my ground force commander there,” Frank McKenzie, the head of US Central Command, told reporters at the Pentagon.
“And he was accompanied by Ambassador Ross Wilson.”
The US Army shared an image taken with night-vision optics of the last US soldier to step aboard the final evacuation flight out of Kabul – Major General Chris Donahue, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division.
Donahue is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. He was sent to Afghanistan this month to facilitate the withdrawal of the American troops.
