How long can world leaders serve? – Times of India

[ad_1]

On January 20, Joe Biden took oath as the 46th president of the United States. But how long is he entitled to serve? As per the US constitution, a president is elected to a four-year term, with a term limit of two terms. This limit was set in 1951 when the 22nd Amendment was ratified.
However, before the 22nd Amendment, a US president could serve an unlimited number of terms. The only one to have done so is Franklin Roosevelt. He was elected four times.
In Mexico, the president is limited to a single six-year term.
Term limits are a welcome check on authority, but in some countries like India there are no term limits on the head of the government. Here’s a look at term limits of selected heads of governments around the world.
