Secure your home say police after rise in burglaries in Lancashire

After a 30 per cent rise in burglaries in Burnley and Pendle over the summer months, police have warned residents to be extra careful. Anyone who does not possess a house alarm should address this as soon as possible.

However, it seems that many of the burglaries could have been prevented with far simpler measures than that. Many took place after people left doors or windows open or unlocked. After 228 burglaries in June, July and August 2009, there were 300 in the same period in 2010.

Detective Inspector Martin Melvin said:

“We did see an increase during the summer but the vast majority of the rise was due to homes that had been left unlocked.

“In so many of the cases it was simply a case of leaving the door open while watching the World Cup.

“Because of that we had to step up to the plate and make an impact on the figures and September has seen the lowest burglary figures I think have ever been reported.

“As part of Operation Saturate we took officers from other parts of the county and put them on the streets to underline the importance of keeping your property secure.”

Police have been delivering advice leaflets in hard-hit areas and the message seems to be working. Home security is of vital importance.
